The YMCA mosaics

In the 1980s Sadao Watanabe made four designs for large scale mosaics. The mosaics were made for the swimming pool facilities of the Yokohama YMCA in Kawasaki, Atsugi, Yamoto and Yokosuka.

In the spirit Christ, and of the Mingei movement, Watanabe preferred that his works hang in the ordinary places of life. Sadao Watanabe would most like to see his works hang in places where people ordinarily gather, because Jesus brought the gospel for the people. [1] And a swimming pool is such a place.

In 2025 the mosaics in Kawasaki and Atsugi have survived time.

1980年代に渡辺禎雄氏は4つの大規模なモザイク模様を制作しました。モザイク画は、川崎、厚木、大和、横須賀にある横浜YMCAのプール施設のために制作されました。

渡辺氏は、キリストと民藝運動の精神に基づき、自分の作品が日常の場所に飾られることを好みました。渡辺禎雄氏は、イエスが人々のために福音をもたらしたことから、人々が普段集まる場所に作品を展示することを最も望んでいました。[1] そしてプールはそんな場所です。

2025年、川崎と厚木のモザイクは時の試練に耐えた。
